Mike McCarthy
Mike McCarthy joined Connacht at the beginning of the 2003-04 season, having begun his professional career with Wasps in 2001. The highlight of 2004 was reaching the European Challenge Cup semi-final against Harlequins. From Connacht he joined Newcastle Falcons, staying there until 2007, becoming a real crowd favourite where he helped them reach the Heineken Cup quarter-final at Parc des Princes
Named Supporters' Player of the Season in 2006, Mike McCarthy then rejoined Connacht for the 2007-08 season, earning his 100th cap for the province against Bayonne in January 2011 in the European Challenge Cup.
During his second stint at Connacht Mike McCarthy has played in all positions of the back five of the pack making him extremely versatile and highlighting his vast array of talents as a rugby player. This ability to preform at the highest level in number of positions resulted in a call-up to the Ireland Six Nations Squad at the beginning of the 2011 season. He bided his time and later that year was rewarded with a first start for Ireland in August against Scotland at Murrayfield.
MIke McCarthy's size, strength and confrontational approach make him both a handful for any defence when carrying the ball but also a very aggressive tackler. His physique, engine and handling ability result in an exceptionally well-rounded rugby player. |
